Do you feel something is missing when you are talking with someone? Have you ever been in a conversation and you just knew that the other person was not getting what you were saying? In my communication in coaching sessions as well as personal relationships I see the value of understanding that everyone is filtering information by way of their own perceptions or reality. Recently I had an experience that really helped me to step back and see my communication in a different way. It helped me sharpen my communication skills and brought understanding to how others “hear” what I say.
By understanding we are all different in the way we perceive the world I have greater ability to communicate in a way that gets the message across. We all have “filters” that sway our perception – new or old beliefs, life experiences and philosophies.
I see I cannot always think that everyone understands what I say. Because others hear me through the filters of their own life experiences and learning I am now more aware of what I say and how I say it. Understanding that everyone has different filters and communicating with this in mind gives me the opportunity to use communication skills in the best way for each experience.
Every interaction with others is an opportunity to learn about our true self!
